Upcycling may sound complicated, but the point is simple: Create new products and jobs from old stuff.
ReFleece, based in Lawrence, Mass., creates electronics accessories—including iPad and Kindle covers—out of used fleece jackets and plastic bottles.
The company wants to inspire others to think about where their products come from. Co-founders Sam Palmer and Jennifer Feller met while working at Patagonia in 1995, where they learned the value of upcycling thanks to public donations of old fleece jackets back to the company. Other material partners include Woolrich, Polartec and Klean Kanteen.
Palmer used a pressing technique to mold the fleece into a new product. Because no manufacturers utilized this technique that did not previously exist, Palmer traveled to factories, teaching the process. This teamwork allowed ReFleece to find a suitable match to produce its creation.
“It's reassuring to be able to visit our manufacturers ourselves, to know that safety and health standards are in place, that they are friendly places to work, and that we can be proud of the work we are creating for people,” Feller said.
