A graduate of Brown University, Penn left his job as a Wall Street municipal bond trader in 1989 to relocate to Aspen, Colorado. His renaissance mountain lifestyle saw him working winters at the resort and summers on the river, eventually leading to a post as advertising director a Climbing Magazine in 1992. Penn founded Backbone in 1997 with two employees and one phone. His enthusiasm and unbridled energy have helped Backbone grow to over 45 employees and over 50 brands.
Nate joined Backbone Media in 1998 after completing an MBA program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. Nate has been instrumental in Backbone's success, combining a love for the outdoors with a keen eye for business and market opportunities. In addition to his duties as a partner at Backbone, Nate has worked as an interim global director of marketing for Polartec, shaping the image of the brand and working closely with every major outdoor apparel company on joint marking programs.
Climber, mountain biker, fly fisherman, backcountry skier but mostly a dad, Greg has a long tenure in the outdoor industry that began when he founded the legendary Philadelphia Rock Gym in 1993. His continued love affair with rock climbing led greg to climbing magazine in Carbondale, where he worked for four years as the advertising director before joining Backbone in 2005. Greg launched the media department at Backbone, which now buys over $30 million annually for clients.
Raised in the capital of the South, Ian spent his formative years living in a tent in West 'by God' Virginia, learning how to flip rafts full of unsuspecting guests on the Gauley River. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Ian migrated to Colorado where he could dovetail his whitewater habit with a ski addiction. Before starting at Backbone, Ian spent seven years pitching Vail to the media as the director of marketing and communications for the local tourism bureau. In his free time Ian tries to keep up with his pro mountain biker wife Sari, and their two young groms Juniper and Axel. Ian has spent the last 11 years at Backbone, working with the firm's diverse portfolio of PR clients and helping it grow to be the country's leading active lifestyle agency.
