Creativity and integration are a way of life at New Belgium Brewery. Backbone Media developed and implemented an integrated media plan to launch the brand's new Ranger IPA beer, generating awareness and anticipation for the new flavor amongst New Belgium's target demographic.

In 2009, we launched the "What's Your Folly?" Facebook application, to grow the Facebook audience by engaging users to become a fan of New Belgium and then send in a response to the question, "What's Your Folly?" to win a cruiser bike. The application drew 2 million social impressions across Facebook, added 11,000 new fans, and almost 7,000 submissions.

Klean Kanteen

Public Relations

In late 2008, we took a “Why us?” approach, separating Klean Kanteen from other metal competitors and built a “behind the bottle” story with philanthropic efforts and strategic partnerships. We also seeded product to influential bloggers to drive the online dialogue. This plan was highly successful with niche environmental, outdoor/active lifestyle, parenting and broad market publications alike. The result was coverage in TIME, Reader’s Digest, Treehugger.com, Entrepreneur, Prevention, Self, and hundreds of other TV and print , totaling almost 210 million impressions in less than two years helping Klean Kanteen grow annual sales by over 1,000 percent.

New Belgium

Media Planning

Ranger IPA launched in February. As the Beer Rangers (New Belgium’s affectionate term for beer sales reps) were the brainchild behind the beer, it was only fitting to focus our marketing efforts around them. The print ad, for instance, featured a Beer Ranger in uniform demonstrating his assigned mission “protect, pour and partake”. On the social web, Rangers also became the center of attention. In anticipation of the Ranger IPA launch, regional Facebook pages and a socially optimized map were created to connect fans with their local beer ranger(s). The map and regional facebook pages enabled people to connect with New Belgium  regarding nearby events and happenings, such as Ranger launch parties and beer pairings.

In sum, as the media landscape changes and it becomes harder to connect with people on an intimate scale, New Belgium stands out as a brand up for the challenge. While the print media campaign developed wide-reaching awareness for Beer Rangers, efforts on Facebook connected the dots. In a fast-paced, ever complicated world, New Belgium Brewing fans still have the opportunity to meet their local Beer Rangers face-to-face, shake hands, and share a beer.

SmartWool

As a lifestyle and performance brand, SmartWool crosses over into different markets.

In order to grow the brand organically throughout the web, Backbone developed an influencer profile that identifies the most influential bloggers and online journalist’s relevant to SmartWool’s niche outdoor markets.

We focused on five niche markets, and identified over 250 active bloggers and online journalists with the most pull. This data will continue to support ongoing online PR strategy for product review as well as provide relevant targets for social media outreach.
